Important and Wise First Steps

Some people might disagree with me with these steps but after doing this for over 10 years and helping others who are new at this, I have found this to be simple and fast for beginners. I tell them to take their time and read carefully because there are many web hosts and registration sites out there who count on ignorance to win your business. You will find the Good, the bad and the ugly here on the Internet believe me. Hopefully together we can make your Internet experience a pleasant one.

If you are new or wanting to get started with putting a website up on the Internet my first advice to you is to take time and find a name for your site. Use the Domain Availability Search above and be sure what you want is available.
Please read Step # 1 below in How To Register A Domain.

Once you have found a domain name that you like and it is available find a webhosting company that will host it. Have a look at our Webhosting if you wish. JLYM has been hosting sites since 1998. We have Free to low cost hosting available. We have 3 months free hosting to help you pay for the cost of your Domain Name Registration and all paid hosting is from $2.95 U.S. to $8.95 U.S. a month. Check what our customers have to say in the Testimony pages.

Once you have found what web host you will use and have applied for begin to register your domain name. As you fill out the forms you will be asked for Name Servers and possibly an IP Address (Internet Provider). If you have chosen one of our plans, our DNS is ns1.jlym.com and ns2.jlym.com  with the IP Address of 72.9.237.198.

NOTE: - Follow the steps below to help you register a site.

How To Register A Domain

Step 1

Find A Domain Name

A domain name, such as jlym.com, signifies your own address on the Internet. As no two parties may ever hold identical domain names, it is truly a unique identifier of you or your company. It is how your customers will remember you and find you among the millions of other Web sites on the Internet.

Try to keep the name you choose simple and to the point. Be wise in how you choose your extensions. Many people like to purchase their own name
(i.e.
www.JaneDoe.com). This type of domain name can be used for anything. For a domain name like the above you might want to get a .NAME instead.  You may not have a business purpose for this name now but remember if it is available there is only one in the world - and I am sure you want to have control of it if you can.

Check the availability and register up to 30 domain names at once with the same registration information. We have made this process simple and friendly.

Step 3

Define Name Server

Each domain name must be associated with normally a minimum of two name servers (primary and secondary). Check with your web Host. They will tell you what to use. A domain name may be associated with as many as twelve name servers.

By default, the name server is set to ns1.nameresolve.com & ns2.nameresolve.com ns3.nameresolve.com & ns4.nameresolve.com  for convenience of those that plan to have their domain or email forwarded.

If you plan to use this domain name on a site, you will have to get the name server from the company that is hosting your site. it should have at least two name servers like for instance
ns1.servername.com & ns2.servername.com

Step 2

Register Your Domain Name

This is a very simple process. Just be sure to take your time and read carefully. Do not get frustrated because we have made the process as simple as possible. We ask you for this information because we need it. All your information is for our use only and is not sold to any third party.

The connection is secure. You will notice a lock at the bottom of your browser. If it is closed it is a secure connection. If it is open it is not secure. Also the address in the URL address box should have https:// before the web address.

When you come to the form, please take a moment to complete the short registration questionnaire so we will have the correct information about you as the owner of your domain name and contact person.

Please Note: Your user name and password must be at least 6 characters and your password cannot be the same as your username. Also, user names are case sensitive.

Step 4

Enter Billing Information

This part is pretty straight forward, just be sure to fill out all of the information and always double check to verify that you have the correct card type and expiration date.

You will receive a confirmation and have the opportunity to print it out - I recommend that you keep this copy in a safe place for future reference.

How do I transfer my domain from my current registrar to you?

To transfer your domain, please start by clicking on the registrar transfer link on our site.

Enter the domains you wish to transfer by clicking the 'Add' button. After you are done entering the domains you wish to transfer, Click 'Next'. The rest of the process is easy to do and includes instructions.

***IMPORTANT***
The Registrant owner information that you enter during the transfer process must be EXACTLY the same as the owner information listed on the Whois of your current Registrar. If the Registrant is a Company, please enter the name of the company in the Company name field. If the Registrant is a person, please enter the information in the first and last name fields. You may also enter owner information in both fields, if you wish. A confirming e-mail will be sent to the Administrative contact's e-mail address.

(NOTE: The Administrative contact may not always be the Registered owner). The administrative contact's email must be current. We make all of our contacts through the Administrative contact and will not be able to complete the transfer process without this confirmation.

Domains cannot be transferred until they have been registered with your current Registrar for at least 60 days.

If the domain information needs to be accessed by someone other than the account owner, you will need to create a separate account for that domain.

If your domain is close to or past it's expiration date, then it is highly likely that your current Registrar will deny your transfer request. You will need to renew the domain with them as soon as possible, or you may risk losing your domain.

Please note that once it is renewed you will be able to transfer it to us without losing the time you have paid with them. Please be sure to wait about a week or so between your renewal and your registrar transfer request.

During the process of transferring your domain to ours be sure to have the DNS (Domain Name Server) information handy of who the server or Webhost is for your site, if you know. Otherwise follow the steps below to register them. (example of DNS - ns1.jlym.com and ns2.jlym.com) (example of IP or Internet Provider address 72.9.237.198)

I Registered a Domain Name. What Do I Do Next?

If you would like Web hosting for your domain, the first thing you need to do is go and check out our Webhosting and there are many others on the Internet. Once you have a Web host you will be given two different name servers, a primary one and a secondary one. You will need to change the name servers listed for your domain to those name servers. You can do this through your account using the instructions below.

Please use these instructions to change your name servers:
1. Log into your account.
2. Click on "Domain List."
3. Click on the domain for which you wish to change the name servers.
4. Click on "Update Name Servers."
5. Type in the name of the first name server, and then click on the "Add" button. Do this for each name server. Please be sure to enter the names of the name servers and NOT the IP addresses. Name server names will typically be something like ns1.nameserver.com. You can remove an entered name server by clicking on the "remove" link next to each name server.
6. When you have finished entering the name servers, please enter the email address to which you would like confirmation sent (if any), and then be sure to click on the "Continue" button.
7. You might have to wait up to 72 hours for the change to propagate but by experience so far it has been around 34 to 48 hours. Each day check to see if you have been activated by the Registrar by going to our Whois Search. Type in your domain name (ex. yourdomain.com). If it is now is valid, it will return a result with an IP address. If not, wait for a few more hours and try your search again. Once you have found your site pointing to your server than you can start to FTP your site to that server..
